Job Overview: Energy Management System (EMS) Engineer

As an Energy Management System (EMS) Engineer, you will be responsible for the development, implementation, and optimization of intelligent energy management solutions within electric vehicles and charging infrastructure. Your work will focus on maximizing energy efficiency, battery performance, and system reliability while ensuring seamless integration with grid and renewable energy systems.

This role is central to the advancement of sustainable mobility and energy systems. You will work at the intersection of hardware, software, and data analytics—collaborating with battery engineers, power electronics teams, embedded software developers, and grid specialists to deliver high-performance, energy-optimized EV ecosystems.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and implement EMS algorithms for real-time monitoring, control, and optimization of energy flow in EVs and charging systems.
  • Develop control strategies for battery usage, regenerative braking, thermal management, and load balancing.
  • Integrate EMS with battery management systems (BMS), motor control units (MCU), and vehicle control units (VCU).
  • Support V2G (Vehicle-to-Grid), V2H (Vehicle-to-Home), and smart charging functionalities.
  • Analyze system performance using simulation tools (MATLAB/Simulink, PSCAD, etc.) and fine-tune energy control models.
  • Collaborate with software teams to embed EMS logic into vehicle and cloud platforms.
  • Contribute to the design of EMS architecture for fleet energy optimization, charging networks, or microgrids.
  • Ensure compliance with energy efficiency standards, grid codes, and cybersecurity protocols.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, Control Systems, or a related discipline.
  • 2–5 years of experience in EMS development, energy systems modeling, or EV powertrain controls.
  • Strong understanding of battery technologies, electric drive systems, and renewable energy integration.
  • Proficiency in simulation tools (MATLAB/Simulink, PSCAD, PLECS) and control algorithm development.
  • Experience with embedded control systems and communication protocols (CAN, Modbus, OCPP).
  • Solid analytical and problem-solving skills with a systems-thinking approach.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of demand response systems, grid-interactive controls, and ISO 15118 standards.
  • Familiarity with cloud-based energy platforms and IoT integration.
  • Experience in energy storage systems (ESS), microgrids, or EV charging infrastructure.
  • Exposure to machine learning or predictive analytics for energy optimization.
